A wealth of literature has correlated changes in peritoneal cell morphology and function to the type and length of exposure to peritoneal dialysis fluids (PDF). Among the many potential etiologies for peritoneal membrane changes the majority relate to PDF composition or contaminants such as glucose, osmolality, pH, lactate, GDPs, AGEs and plasticizers. Thus, it is imperative to continue working on more biocompatible solutions. For more details on PDF composition and biocompatibility click PD Solution Formulation or Biocompatibility of PD Solutions.
