1. Evaluate for hernias, diastasis
2. Locate optimal exit site location to maximize self-care skills by placing the patient in the sitting
position and laterally mark the appropriate location
a. Assess patient for dexterity, vision, handedness, strength, motor skills
b. Avoid scars, beltline, skin folds, pressure points
3. Obtain baseline weight and vital signs
4. NPO
5. Bowel preparation
6. Empty bladder
7. Shower with disinfectant soap
8. Consider prophylactic antibiotics or administer antistaphylococcal antibiotic one hour preoperatively
and schedule additional dose 6-12 hours post operatively.
