Instillation of fluid into the peritoneal cavity can result in unique complications unrelated to infections. These complications are mostly associated with the increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) generated by PDF (see Exchange Volume and Position) or by the presence of a peritoneal catheter.
Complications associated with increased IAP include:
Herniae
Genital and Anterior Abdominal Wall Edema
Hydrothorax
Low Back Pain
Gastro-esophageal Reflux (GERD)
Respiratory Complications
Other Complications Associated with Increased Intra-abdominal Pressure
Other complications:
Gastrointestinal complications
Hemoperitoneum
Chyloperitoneum
Infusion Pain
Electrolyte Abnormalities
Acid-Base Abnormalities
Ultrafiltration Failure
Peritoneal Sclerosis
