Despite an ever-increasing literature describing the results of frequent dialysis, patient numbers are small and analysis of long-term survival is not possible. No randomized controlled trial has yet been completed comparing conventional and increased frequency, although the NIH has initiated one. In the discussion that follows, data will be selected mainly where either patient acted as their own controls or adequate case controls were included.
