Talat Alp Ikizler, MD

Ikizler-photo.jpgTalat Alp Ikizler, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.  Dr. Ikizler also serves as Medical Director/CEO of the Vanderbilt University Outpatient Dialysis Unit, Director of Clinical Research in Nephrology and Director of the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC).


Brief summary of job history:

After earning his medical degree from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in Turkey,  Dr. Ikizler completed a residency also in Istanbul, and an internal medicine residency and fellowship in nephrology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  He has been in the faculty at VUMC since 1996.


Professional and academic achievements:

Dr. Ikizler has made significant contributions to the field of nutrition and metabolism in patients with kidney disease.  An avid researcher, he is an investigator on numerous studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, the FDA, and the National Kidney Foundation.  A former work group member of the NKF’s K/DOQI, Dr. Ikizler’s work has been published in a number of scientific journals, including Kidney International, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and the Journal of Clinical investigation.  He is the President-elect of the International Society of Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease.


Board-certified in internal medicine with a subspecialty in nephrology, Dr. Ikizler is a member of several professional organizations, including The American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology and American Society of Clinical Investigation.
